Reincarnation and Soulmates: Could Your Relationships Have a Backstory?

Reincarnation and soulmates – insights from past life experts and spiritual teachers.

Some people enter your life and feel familiar almost immediately. You talk for an hour, but it feels as though you're picking up a conversation you started years ago.

With others, the connection is harder to understand. You care deeply, yet the same tension keeps showing up. Or someone changes your life in a short space of time, and then you part ways.

Could there be more to these relationships than the history you remember?

Reincarnation is central to my spiritual practice: we meet the same souls across lifetimes – different roles, different relationships, a connection that continues.

Having trained with Dr Brian Weiss and guided hundreds of people through past life journeys, my own spiritual understanding is that we reincarnate in soul clusters, meeting the same souls over and over again – different roles, different relationships, familiar connections. Authors such as Dr Brian Weiss and Dolores Cannon, alongside the Seth teachings recorded by Jane Roberts, explore this idea in different ways.

Dr Brian Weiss: a soulmate isn’t always a romantic partner

Dr Brian Weiss, psychiatrist and author of Only Love Is Real, and my teacher, says that soulmates are not limited to romantic partners. On his official website, he writes: “Romantic love is only one of these types.”

Through my training with Dr Brian Weiss, I understand soulmates as connections that take many forms. In this understanding, we have more than one soulmate in a lifetime. Think of the friend who understands your silence, a family member who feels like home, or someone who helps you find a strength you didn’t know you had.

A deep friendship deserves the same recognition as a romance. That closeness matters just as much.

Dr Weiss also says that a soulmate connection does not mean you are obliged to spend your whole life together. In my work, I understand that a relationship has meaning even when you part ways. Carry the love and what you learned with you, while choosing a different future.

Dolores Cannon: familiar souls, different relationships

Dolores Cannon’s Between Death and Life explores accounts given by people under hypnosis about experiences they associated with life between incarnations.

In a client account shared by Cannon, the speaker refers to “close karmic connections with in former lifetimes”.

The account describes recognising familiar souls and remembering more than one lifetime together.

Cannon’s material also describes people meeting again in different roles. In Cannon’s account, a partner in one lifetime returns as a parent, child or friend in another.

Within that spiritual framework, the relationship changes while the connection continues – a reason why someone you’ve only recently met feels unusually familiar.

Seth and Jane Roberts: emotional connections across lifetimes

Jane Roberts channelled spiritual teachings from Seth, whom she described as a nonphysical personality. In Seth Speaks, the message about relationships is clear: people with strong emotional connections meet again across lifetimes, taking on different roles in each other’s lives.

In these teachings, a family connection is part of a wider soul story. People come together again to work through old difficulties, with new roles creating opportunities to respond differently.

Think about the role you often take in your relationships. Are you the peacemaker? The one who looks after everyone? The person who finds it hard to ask for help?

These questions bring the teaching into your life today. Begin by noticing what you keep repeating – and deciding what you’re ready to do differently. Ask for support. Say what you need. Start there.

What about karmic relationships?

In spiritual language, a karmic relationship often means a connection that’s bringing unfinished lessons or recurring patterns into focus.

Intensity is not a reason to accept mistreatment. Calling something karmic does not make unhealthy behaviour acceptable.

If a connection repeatedly leaves you feeling deeply hurt or experiencing abuse, the useful question is what needs to change. A soul connection still needs respect and boundaries in everyday life.

Sometimes the gift of a relationship is discovering your own strengths and knowing that it’s time to complete the chapter and move on.

Exploring your own past life connections

An ivy-covered door barely ajar with warm light spilling through

I believe a past life journey is one of the greatest gifts you give yourself. In my work, the purpose is to open your perspective on life and return to a deeply personal question: how do I want to live the life I have now?

When I guide my clients through what they experience as an entire past lifetime, we look at the life as a whole: how they lived, the relationships they held close and, especially, the death scene – how that life ended and the circumstances surrounding their death. Looking back from that moment brings a deeply personal question into focus: what mattered, and what did they spend their life holding on to?

In a session, we look at your current struggles with fresh eyes. We explore the fears and relationship patterns that keep showing up: the root of these patterns, what they mean to you and what you’re ready to let go of.

Every journey is unique. For me, this reflection is the heart of its life-changing potential: seeing your present life with fresh eyes and recognising how you want to live it.

You cannot change the past, but you can change how you see it and what you carry from it. When an old experience still holds an emotional charge, it colours how you feel, react and relate to others today. Looking at it with fresh eyes gives you room to choose your response – and live this chapter feeling more empowered. Sometimes that fresh perspective is the beginning of treating yourself more gently, appreciating the people you love, or finding the courage to close a chapter.

I use the same techniques as Dr Brian Weiss to gently guide you through past life experiences.
